| A previously-owned, refurbished unit purchased from a
commercial seller on eBay.com. The price including S&H was less than $500.00. The unit was upgraded to 256MB ram
memory and a 20GB hdd. The operating system was WINDOWS 2000 PRO. I am not a fan of MicroSuck, I immediately
ordered a hdd caddy and new 40GB hard drive. I also purchased a dvd-rom/cd-rw drive - ouch!, it hurt. The price
was now approx $750. I used a NETGEAR MA-111 usb wireless adapter I had previously purchased. I then removed the
Windows2000 hard disk and carefully stored it in my travel case with the origional CDROM, Floppy Drive and parallel
port connector for the floppy. This gave me a harware system ready for a new OS. I choose
Debian GNU/Linux, Testing version for most of the latest features and
drivers, and some stability. This is used primarily as my entertainment and control system. It provides
Internet Browsing, Internet Web Mail, DVD viewing with headphones - My wife loves that!, SSH linking to my
home-network servers, word processing, etc. |
